Silves is one of the prettiest places in the Algarve and my favorite town to visit for a day out, here are my top things to do in Silves.
This historic medieval town used to be the capital of the Algarve during the Moorish times. Here you can enjoy beautiful views of citrus trees and vineyards, a hilltop castle, and a charming old town.
Things to do in Silves
Silves old town
Silves old town is rather tiny so you can wander around without any proper route in mind. Walk up the charming alleys to admire the view and then find your way to the town hall and the beautiful main square at Praça do Municipio. Be aware of the slippery cobblestones (yes, slippery! So take it easy when you stroll around).
Silves Castle and Cathedral
An impressive red brick castle from the Moorish era dominates the city. It is the largest and best-preserved castle in the Algarve and a visit is only a few euros.
Right in front of the castle is Silves Cathedral, a gothic monument that was built on the same spot as a former mosque.
