Here are the best things to do in the Algarve. My Algarve top ten includes must-see sights, stunning beaches, charming villages, hidden gems, where to eat and much more.
Praia da Marinha is an iconic beach near Lagoa. It is known for its astonishing cliffs and blue water. Next to Praia da Marinha is the famous Benagil sea caves. It is best explored by kayaking or stand-up paddle as it allows you to enter the sea cave. The caves can also be visited by boat if you just want to see it from the outside.
Lagos is a slightly bigger town, with many things to see. The old town is a lively spot with cute streets, shops, churches, restaurants, and a port. The most popular sight in Lagos is Ponta de Piedade, a stunning place with impressive rock formations and caves. Read more about Lagos here.
Where to eat: Arribalé, Casa do Prego and A Petisqueira.
A charming riverside fishing village with colourful houses, narrow cobbled streets and great seafood restaurants. I enjoy Ferragudo as it has retained much of its original charm. A visit here is a must if you are looking for an authentic and traditional Algarve. Read more about Ferragudo.
Where to eat: Borda do Cais and Sueste
Praia da Falésia is considered as the number one beach in the Algarve. It is a unique beach with a long stretch of sandy beach set against fascinating red and white sand cliffs.
Silves is a historical medieval town surrounded by citrus trees and vineyards. This used to be the capital of the Algarve during the Moorish times. Here you can enjoy beautiful views, a hilltop castle, and a charming old town. Read more about Silves.
Where to eat: Restaurante Marisqueira Rui and stop by for a coffee at Café DaRosa.
Faro is a historic and culturally rich city that boasts a variety of interesting tourist attractions like Arco da Vila, ancient quarters, chapel of bones, Ria Formosa natural park boat tour and much more. Read more about Faro.
Where to eat: Se7e Pedras and Portas de Sao Pedro.
Tavira is arguably Algarve's most charming town. The ruins of a hilltop castle, an old Roman bridge, churches, cute streets, and cool shops are among its top attractions. Read more about Tavira.
Where to eat: Come na Gaveta, Aquasul and D'gusta.
Follow the Algar Seco and Carvoeiro boardwalk to discover hundreds of meters of fascinating coastline, with impressive rock formations and grottoes. A fun adventure for all ages! Read more about Algar Seco.
Faro is the gateway to the Ria formosa natural park and the beautiful sandbank islands that skirt this protected region. The Ria formosa is a series of saltwater lagoons and a haven for birdlife and saltwater aquatic life.
The chapel of Nossa Senhora da Rocha is well worth a visit for its enchanting location. The church is set on top of stunning cliffs overlooking the impressive Atlantic ocean and gorgeous beaches.
