A quick guide for how to best enjoy Faro

Updated: May 5, 2023

Faro, the capital of the Algarve is a lovely mix of everything. Here you will find many interesting things to do; churches, ancient quarters, beautiful parks, a marina and cool restaurants. I like Faro because it has more of a Portuguese feel to it than some of the resort towns along the coast.

Things to do in Faro

Old town Faro

Arco da Vila is a gateway set in the ancient Moorish city wall, built to give visitors a grand welcome. As you pass through the ancient arch you will enter Cidade Velha, the older and much calmer part of the town. Make your way to the Cathedral of Faro and then continue to the Episcopal Palace, a former home to the bishop of Faro.

Downtown Faro

The downtown is great for food and shopping. Walk along beautiful, sun protected streets and discover a more modern and lively side of Faro. Make a stop at Comur Conserveira de Portugal, a one-of-a-kind shop for Portugal's famous canned fish.

Igreja do Carmo

Another famous place to visit in Faro is Igreja do Carmo. A church where the walls of the chapel are covered with human skulls and bones of more than 1,200 monks.

Ria Formosa natural park boat tour

Ria Formosa natural park is a protected nature reserve with an immense lagoon, a collection of small islands and rich birdlife. If nature is your things, join one of the many boat tours that depart from the marina.
